Steps to Becoming a Trained Leader

Fast Start Designed to familiarize new leaders with their basic job responsibilities. This is an introduction to Scouting and should be followed with basic training as soon as possible. This training is available for all programs within the Boy Scouts of America. Take the Fast Start Training Course within two weeks of signing on as a leader. You can take the course online or request a video from the Scout office. Online Fast Start Training: Cub Scout | Boy Scout | Venturing New Leader Essentials New Leader Essentials is about 90 minutes long. It's the first part of the training you'll need to become officially "Trained." It covers the BASICS of Scouting. Take it at a regularly scheduled training event - check the council newsletter for the next date. More Information Leader Specific Training After you complete the "Essentials" you'll move into the training that is specific to your position, such as Den Leader, Committee Member, etc. This takes about 2 hours. Check the newsletter for the next scheduled date (usually combined with the "Essentials"). More Information If you are in Boy Scouting, or are a Webelos Leader / Assistant Leader, then you'll need to complete your basic training with Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, usually held over a weekend at one of our camps. Check the newsletter for next available date. Supplemental Training Courses Supplemental training is offered at Roundtables, Pow Wows, and additional training events as scheduled. Attend the Roundtables! That's where you get new and up to date information and ideas for your program. |
