Sporting Clays for Scouting is an exciting opportunity for sportsmen to support local Scouting programs. Every year Scouting introduces more young people to shooting sports than any other organization. By participating in our Sporting Clays for Scouting program sportsmen are ensuring that a new generation of shooting sports enthusiasts are being given the opportunity to enjoy the sport.

Sporting Clays Facts

  • The program started in the Blackhawk Area Council, BSA in the fall of 2000, as a means to raise money for local Scouting programs.

  • Over the course of seven years more than $130,000 has been raised. Money raised helps keep the cost of Scouting activities low for all of our Scouts. Would you believe that a full week of summer camp, including program, food, and lodging only costs a boy $185! This is half of what most sports camps cost.

  • The event has evolved from a Trap/Sporting Clays event to a pure Sporting Clays activity that will feature twenty challenging stations. What separates our event from others is that, while challenging, all shooters will be able to hit birds and have a good time. Some stations are tougher than others, and there is a wide variety of creatively planned shots.

  • Shooters at the event come from all walks of life, including local business owners, professionals from various fields, and registered to casual shooters. Everybody is welcome as long as they are safe.

  • This event has become one of the largest Sporting Clays shoots in the state of Illinois! This year we expect at least 240 shooters.

  • Sponsorships for the event range from $550 for a team to $3,000 to sponsor the event (three teams). Those not wanting to field a team may also sponsor portions of the event, including lunch, stations, porta-jons etc. We will have at least seventy sponsors this year! Larger sponsorships ($250 or more) are recognized with signage at the event and mention in the program.

  • The event this year will have two shifts, the first beginning in the morning and the second in the afternoon. At this time there are spots open in the afternoon shift. There is also a nice lunch provided either before or after you shoot. Each shift takes approximately four hours to complete.

  • Recognition for winning shooters and teams is provided through a plaque for the winning team that stays at the Upland Hunt Club, and through a newsletter that is distributed after the event. Most of our shooters realize the value of donating to the Scouting council, and have requested that we not give out trophies and medals.

  • The 2008, 9th Annual Sporting Clays For Scouting event will take place on Saturday, September 20 at Upland Hunt Club “Where Great Shots Are Made”. For more information on the event please contact Chris Long at the Boy Scout Office (815) 397-0210.
