National Youth Leadership Training

National Youth Leadership Training is meant to inspire Scouts to improve their leadership skills. NYLT has six objectives:

  1. To give participants the confidence and knowledge to run the troop program.
  2. To give participants a working knowledge of the eleven skills of leadership and help them relate these skills to their troop responsibilities.
  3. To give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other troops.
  4. To create an atmosphere where Scouts will experience Scouting at its best.
  5. To develop a relationship between the participant and his Scoutmaster.
  6. To have fun!
The conference will focus on training the top boy leader in the troop, the senior patrol leader. The participants do not have to be serving currently in the role of SPL, but should have the skills and abilities to do so in the future.

The conference will stress two areas of benefit to the troop. First, Scoutcraft skills and how they can be passed on to the other Scouts of the troop and patrol; and secondly, the skills of leadership that will make the junior leader more effective in his job.

Qualifications:  The Scout must be at least 13 years of age by the date of the course, hold the rank of First Class or above, and be in a leadership position or likely to be in one in the near future. Be aware, experience has shown that younger Scouts often lack the physical and emotional maturity to benefit fully from this experience.

Setting: The conference is conducted in a camp setting. It is important that the Scout have skills in hiking, camping, and cooking.
