She usually keeps a low profile, avoiding the spotlight… you know, working in the
background in support of her fellow volunteers. Recognition is just not something that
Mary Anne Rounds seeks out.
For decades now, she has quietly gone about her volunteer work with a passion that has
distinguished her as one of the most committed Scouters any of us has ever seen. But
recognition has found her now...Big Time!
Oh she’s been recognized many times over
the years, don’t get me wrong. She’s received the President’s Award of Merit, the
District’s highest award; she’s received the Silver Beaver, the Council’s highest award;
she’s received the Silver Antelope, the Region’s highest award; and now she has been
notified that she will receive the Boy Scouts of America’s highest award, the Silver
Buffalo!

You may not realize it, but Mary Anne Rounds has played an important role in your own
Scouting Volunteer experience. She has helped to develop and proof read and finalize
virtually every page of Cub Scout Division literature in print. That includes all BSA
training materials, as well as Program Helps, and most all of the other Cub Scout
publications published by BSA. Mary Anne also is the Editor of our Council’s Courier
newsletter, Cub Leader Trainer, Pow Wow staffer, and so on.
She started as a Den Leader, and has progressed up the ranks to Pack Committee, Troop
Committee, District Committee, Council Executive Board, Regional Committees, and the
National Cub Scout Committee.
So just how big a deal is it to receive the Silver Buffalo? Well from our Council, only
two other people have ever received the Silver Buffalo: Ray Wood, and Illinois Governor
Frank Lowden. Other recipients over the years include: Hank Aaron, Neil Armstrong, Gerald R
Ford, Bob Hope, Charles Lindberg, Vince Lombardi, Jim Lovell, Colin Powell, Donald
Rumsfeld, Jimmy Stewart, and 13 Presidents of the United States! And now, Mary Anne
Rounds, who while she has worked so hard to stay out of the limelight, will find herself
in the bright lights with some pretty impressive company.
The 2007 Silver Buffalo Awards will be presented at the end of May at the BSA’s
National Meeting in Atlanta. In the meantime, congratulate her when you see her. We’ll
have some pictures for you in a subsequent issue of The Blackhawk Courier.
